Shelly KoumelisContinued from Our Leadership

Throughout the years, I have served on numerous committees while being an active member at TOR. I have also co-chaired the Purim Carnival for a couple of years. I care deeply about the children of TOR, but what makes us so special is that we have programs available for everyone. Whether you have toddlers in the Gan K'tan program, pre-teens about to become a b'mitzvah, interfaith families, and seniors everyone is welcomed with open arms. I look forward to working with the other Board Members to make this next year the best yet at Temple Or Rishon.

After having our 2 sons, Daniel & Matthew, we officially joined TOR so that they could participate in the education program. Both boys went through the many years of Sunday school & Hebrew school, had their Bar Mitzvah, were confirmed and were both madrichim. Daniel is now in New York attending RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) as an aerospace engineering major. Matthew, a junior at Rocklin High School, is currently a madrich for Marcia. After college, I worked for years as an engineer at HP in the bay area, where I met my husband. When we moved to Rocklin and had kids, I started another career out of my passion for photography. I have been a professional photographer for almost 10 years and love the opportunities I have from this job. It’s wonderful to be able to attend services for a Bar/bat Mitzvah, feel spiritually fulfilled & also capture wonderful memories for the family. This has also been a wonderful way for me to meet more members of our wonderful congregation.  Being part of the TOR community for 20 years has been an important part of my life and for those in my family. I’ve made many close friends through this congregation and have an extended family through my Havurah. I’ve also had the honor of serving on multiple committees at TOR over the years, as well as serving as a trustee on the board.

As an Interfaith family, we immediately felt comfortable and welcomed to our synagogue! Since that time, our son has become a Bar Mitzvah and our daughter will soon become a Bat Mitzvah! As a Trustee on the Board and a Membership Committee member, I am excited to be able to represent Interfaith families and am happy to offer assistance to both our current congregants and to potential new members in making decisions as part of our TOR family!
In my spare time, I train for Marathons and have completed 10.  I am also an avid triathlete, having completed 3 Half Ironmans in this past year!  I give 100% in everything I do, including representing Temple Or Rishon.
I look forward to meeting you and hopefully welcoming you to the TOR Family!

I was approached to serve as Treasurer on the board in 1995 and I have volunteered again this year.

As active members of the congregation we feel part of a thriving Jewish community.

Apart from feeling at home at TOR, there's another reason the temple is near and dear to me: It's where I met my husband, Ned Cohen, (past president of TOR). This year we will celebrate our 20th anniversary! I grew up in the mid-west and my first experience in California was in the bay area. It was nice (what's not to like about California?!), but it didn't feel like home. After finishing graduate school I moved to Roseville and found my home away from home! I've been a nurse practitioner for over 25 years. I "retired" from Kaiser in 2012, but continue to run 8 flu clinics for Kaiser's North Valley during the flu season, August through January. It's hard to believe that TOR has been a part of my life for almost a quarter of a century! There have been many changes during that time; it seems impossible that in 2014 we're celebrating TOR's 30 anniversary! I look forward to continued participation within the Temple Or Rishon community.

Or Rishon Bar/Bat Mitzvahs

Oliver Smith

On June 10, 2017 Oliver Smith (Hebrew name: Baruch Aviv ben Leah) will be called-up to read from the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. Oliver is a 7th grade student at Sutter Middle School in Folsom, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA. He has a variety of interests and hobbies including camping, coin collecting, and magic. He enjoys learning about the latest advances in technology and built his own computer from parts. As a member of TOR and a Star rank in Boy Scouts, he participates in community service throughout the year. For his Bar Mitzvah service project he worked to clean litter from our local trails. Oliver is excited to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah with his TOR family and friends.

Hannah MarminsWe look forward to taking part in the celebration of Hannah’s Bat Mitzvah on August 19th, 2017. Hannah’s preparation for this significant day has been admirable. We’ve seen her determination and persistence grow along with our pride and joy. Hannah is an amazing young woman. She is an eclectic creative with a kind soul. Hannah loves art, music, dance, fashion, design and anything that happens on or near the water. Her Mitzvah Project is raising awareness and fundraising with Girlup.org to give girls access to education where they have none. She is a fierce advocate for those who don’t have a voice or that face discrimination. Hannah's mitzvah project embodies her passion. Mazel tov, Hannah Rose!
