A very positive part of our Jewish experience at TOR is being a member of a Chavurah. Our Chavurah has 7 families, with kids ranging from 5 – 15. We get together several times during the year outside of Synagogue; celebrating holidays, instilling Jewish traditions, and just having fun! It’s important with such a diverse community in the Sacramento region that our children get together with other Jewish families to carry on our Jewish customs and faith. As a member of the Temple’s board, I’d like to continue to work on making TOR a community; a place where everyone feels welcome, where our kids can share common Jewish interests, and where we develop our spirituality.

I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, but have lived my adult life in this area. I have two grown children, and one son-in-law...making me a semi-empty nester. In 2007, I retired from a career in Education: I was a teacher for 23 years in Loomis, and an administrator for in Natomas for the next 19 years.
I treasure the religious services, the many activities and the sense of community I find at Temple Or Rishon. I am looking forward to another great year – with a caring board, a devoted Rabbi and a warm and nurturing community.

Temple Or Rishon

Board of Trustees 2017-2018

Kimberly Olker

Hello. My name is Kimberly Olker, Vice President of the TOR Board of Trustees. I have been part of TOR (originally as Sunrise Jewish Congregation) since moving to the area in 1993.  My husband Dave & I  were looking for a place where we felt comfortable as an interfaith couple… and this was it. After having our 2 sons, Daniel & Matthew, we officially joined TOR so that they could participate in the education program. Both boys went through the many years of Sunday school, Hebrew school, their Bar Mitzvah, TASTY, confirmation, & being a madrich. They are now both going to school on the east coast.I served on the TOR board for 4 years before this current position.

I am a certified professional photographer specializing in portraiture and events. It’s especially fulfilling for me when I can attend TOR Bar/bat Mitzvah services while also capturing  wonderful memories for the family. I also serve on the local board for PPSV, the Professional Photographers of Sacramento Valley.

I have seen Temple Or Rishon grow and change over the last ~25 years and look forward to being a part of the TOR community in the future.

 ShellyK2 Shelly Koumelis

Hi, I am Shelly Koumelis.  My two children (Mitch and Maddie) previously participated in our synagogue's pre-school program and I wanted to find continuity with a warm, open temple community to join when we moved to Roseville. My husband Mark and I found that sense of community here at TOR. My children have both attended our Religious/Hebrew school, became a bar and bat mitzvah, my son has been confirmed and my daughter will follow as well. Both still attend our Teen Or program and both participate in TASTY (our youth group).   (Read more...)

Mark Silber

My wife, Rachel, and I joined TOR in 2003 after we moved to El Dorado County from the Bay Area and when our children (Noah, now 19, and Maya, now 15) were still little. Over the years, we’ve become increasingly involved in temple activities and leadership – from a great chavurah to gala fundraisers, Men’s Club, the security committee, and various other roles and events. The members of Or Rishon have come to feel like an extension of our own family, and their influences have helped us shape our kids into the happy and secure people they are becoming. In addition to my personal experience with our temple community,  I bring to my role as a TOR board trustee more than 25 years of business experience in purchasing and general management for biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies, and a commitment to represent and fulfill both the current and future needs of our diverse and growing membership.

Jenifer Jacobs

My name is Jenifer Jacobs and I am a clinical psychologist and mother of three (ages 14 -Emma, 10 – Max, and 6 – Lily - she’s the one singing Modeh Ani on the website!).  My husband Michael and I (and the littles) joined TOR in 2012 at the request of my eldest who was looking for Jewish friends her age and working towards her bat mitzvah.  Over the course of the past two years we have found a home here, and made what will clearly be lifelong friends.  We have all enjoyed being  active members of committees and attending TOR events, and I am honored to be able to serve this lovely congregation . I know I cannot give back nearly as much as we get from this community but I will try.

Doug Robins

Immediate Past President

Hello, I’m Doug Robins, President of the Board of Trustees. Our family joined TOR in 1996 (the donut shop days). For me, TOR is a place of learning, tradition, and community. We have a warm and welcoming congregation that I want to continue to see grow, not just in size, but also in what we have to offer the community. I look forward to working with the other Board members to help make this a successful year at TOR.

Or Rishon Bar/Bat Mitzvahs

Oliver Smith

On June 10, 2017 Oliver Smith (Hebrew name: Baruch Aviv ben Leah) will be called-up to read from the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. Oliver is a 7th grade student at Sutter Middle School in Folsom, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA. He has a variety of interests and hobbies including camping, coin collecting, and magic. He enjoys learning about the latest advances in technology and built his own computer from parts. As a member of TOR and a Star rank in Boy Scouts, he participates in community service throughout the year. For his Bar Mitzvah service project he worked to clean litter from our local trails. Oliver is excited to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah with his TOR family and friends.

Hannah MarminsWe look forward to taking part in the celebration of Hannah’s Bat Mitzvah on August 19th, 2017. Hannah’s preparation for this significant day has been admirable. We’ve seen her determination and persistence grow along with our pride and joy. Hannah is an amazing young woman. She is an eclectic creative with a kind soul. Hannah loves art, music, dance, fashion, design and anything that happens on or near the water. Her Mitzvah Project is raising awareness and fundraising with Girlup.org to give girls access to education where they have none. She is a fierce advocate for those who don’t have a voice or that face discrimination. Hannah's mitzvah project embodies her passion. Mazel tov, Hannah Rose!
