President's Message May 2008 This past month we were treated to another wonderful event. Jeremy Gimbel gave our Temple a concert of his wonderful music. We had over 200 people show up to enjoy two hours of Jeremy’s music, which we have all enjoyed previously during Shabbat services as well as working with our children at Sunday school. Jeremy always has a smile on his face and you can tell he loves giving us the joy of his music. Hopefully, you had an opportunity to purchase one of Jeremy’s CD’s, because unfortunately after this school year Jeremy will no longer be with us as he moves on to further pursue his desire to be a Jewish leader. It takes many people to put on a concert like this. We all need to thank Marcia Greene who spends many hours in her office to make sure that events like this one run smoothly. But like many events that go on in our Temple, Marcia had help to put this on including Gil Illanit and the Education Committee, plus many others. As you can see, you, the members of our congregation make our community the great place it is. But we need everyone’s help to make all these events a success. Purim carnivals, Passover Seders, Chanukah Latke parties, Book clubs, Men’s Club, Sisterhood and special events like when the Sacramento Philharmonic comes to play at TOR, all need congregants to support these events and clubs. If you would like to spend a little time to support your congregation and would like to know how to start please contact Cecily Kane at chcoholic@hotmail.com. Well one Jewish event that happens every week is Shabbat and we ask all our congregants to help with making our Shabbat services a wonderful event on Friday nights. At Temple Or Rishon we have the tradition of asking everyone to take a turn at helping with our Friday night Oneg. Not only are you getting the opportunity to do a mitzvah on Shabbat but if you are like me it is an opportunity to meet new friends at the Temple as you work together in setting up the Oneg. So please, the next time you receive the letter from the Temple informing you that you have been selected to help in an upcoming Oneg, don’t throw out the letter. Instead contact the Oneg leader and find out how you can help and have a great Shabbat. Cal Sachs |
